“Cats and Crochet”

So as I sat at my fiancé’s softball game, first of the season for Fall Ball, chatting with the girls while watching the men play; I broke out my yarn and hook. One of the guys looks over and goes, “Wow, cats and crochet…you went from 26 to 70 real fast…” A woman turned around and asked how many cats do I have? I replied with one…she didn’t ask how many ridiculous pictures and videos of my cat do I post online, or how many videos and cat memes do I like online, so I don’t think u answer was misleading lol.  The other splendid part of that dialogue was that I had just turned 29, so I’ll just focus on the fact that he said 26 and tune out the rest.

At any rate, I was able to complete my latest pillow- an Irish Flag Pillow. Super simple to make. My fiancé actually picked out the colors for the flag perfectly. He’s now pretty good at shopping through the yarn aisles with me since everywhere I go that has yarn I drag him to. I used all Red Heart Super Saver yarn.

To begin I chained 33 I started with the green but you can start with orange as well, doesn’t matter.

Row 1- HDC(33) chain 2 and turn.

Continue row 1 through row 13 then FO and color change to your off white color. Repeat Row 1 again through row 13.

Follow above directions to switch to either your green or orange.

Create another panel using off white for the back portion.

Chain 33

Row 1-36 HDC chain two and flip

I had created the back switching every row and only HDC into FP but that’s completely up to you.

I edged both pieces starting in the corner-any corner- SC in same hole 3x and then SC in next chain continue all the way around. Creating SC 3x in ea corner to round the edges.

I went around each panel twice.

I closed the pillow single crocheting through ea piece to connect and left the long side open. This fit a 12″x16″ pillow insert and then closed up that side. And BOOM! Donezo. Irish pride.

Hope you like this pattern! Would love to see pictures if anyone creates.

PILLOW PLUNDERING

I’ve become slightly obsessed with crocheting. I have looked up numerous patterns and projects to do with yarn. Bought tons, and tons of yarn; online at Craftsy and a bunch at Walmart and Michaels. I started an excel chart to understand my spending on this hobby.

Originally I thought all I could make we’re blankets. But they get cumbersome and take a lot of time and yarn, I’m more of an instant gratification type of gal. Also, it’s summer, I can’t be covered by a blanket the whole time, uck.

At any rate, I’ve become slightly obsessed with pillows now. They allow you to change up your space lickity split, without purchasing costly larger pieces to change your home up on a whim.

Here’s an image of my WIP.

Loving this basket weave stitch.

I found this awesome pattern by  Little Monkey Crochet site

I’m thinking of switching up the back piece to give some variety and doing lines across.

I’ll keep ya posted. Share some pictures of your WIPs!

Update!!!

Welp, here it is in all its glory finished off.

Succulent Life

I’ve been seeing succulents everywhere. It’s time to jump on the bandwagon. I was recently away with my fiancé’s family in Amish Country and went to a festival where I was delighted to find a few booths had these awesome succulents and air plants.

Next step is to read up on them and understand exactly all the ways I can kill them….I do not have a green thumb.

                       Adorable!

(Edit)

it’s been a few weeks and I’ve happily had these little beings on my desk under a light source, I barely water them and I repotted them. They’re doing splendidly! And they look so friggin awesome, it could be the cute little gnome I have with a wheel barrow next to them, but I digress. I’m looking forward to purchasing more of these and highly recommend anyone who wants some low maintenance plant life to brighten up their desk to grab some.

I’ve seen some things on Pinterest that will change the color of the leaves if you give it food colored water, I’d love to try that out. Let me know if anyone has done this and share pics!

Ugly Traditions

I’m truly not one for Holidays. The only one I really enjoy is Thanksgiving….hey, I love food, what can I say?!

A couple months ago I inadvertently started a Birthday tradition at my fiancé’s family’s house. I had just gotten really into crocheting again, had made a bunch of scarves and shawls and wanted to branch out to these cute little animal pillows I had seen on Pinterest. Well I started with a penguin, how hard could that be?!

I get distracted easily, so I decided after making the two rounds that I would change it up, Kate is a cat lady, I should clearly make a cat. I got orange and brown yarn and got to work, I had a great vision. My vision led to something I can only explain as a clear Pinterest Fail. This round stuffed pillow with oddly shaped brown spots and miss-shapen eyes was staring back at me.

My Pinspiration

Horrifying…I know.

Now at this point, I’ve spent a good amount of time and energy on this guy.  I’m also out of options, I quickly tell myself that it isn’t as bad as it looks and she’ll love it.  She takes in strays, this could be the same thing.  The ever faithful moment came…she opens the bag, I wait with baited breath and look away.  The entire room erupts into laughter, literally, tears are shed over this masterpiece.  Low and behold, she enjoyed the effort and it definitely was comical.  I was even receiving random pictures of this guy accompanying her on adventures for a few weeks.  Everyone demanded that this was the new tradition…Ugly Pillows for everyone’s birthday.
Today I will embark on creating a bird…or a turtle…or whatever monster comes out for my mother in-law’s birthday.  I’ll keep you posted on what monster arrives.

update!!!

So after some deliberation I decided, actually my fiance said-“my mom likes birds make her a bird”, so a bird has been hatched.  We gave her this little guy in a bag with a bird house Totes Adorbs, I know. 😉

I’m not going to lie, I think he’s actually pretty adorable.  I think Kate got the short end of the stick on the monster spectrum.  On the plus side I have since been asked to create a few for some people.  My next venture will be a Flamingo.
Look out for them on my Etsy Page, unique creatures will be coming soon!
Suggestions on an animal that I should create, leave in comments below!
